COMPETITIVE DISTRICT
In 2010, Gubernatorial candidate Tom Foley (R) carried 57 or the 65 towns. In 2008, President Obama won the 2nd 60/40, but now has a 40% approval rating.
In the past 20 years, there have been multiple Congressional elections won by less then 1%. Often these close elections were during cycles where the incumbent raised 3-4 times more funds then the challenger.
Connecticuts 2012 Challenge
The 2nd Congressional District is within a sea of Democratic seats in New England. This block of candidates work together to raise hundreds of millions of dollars to defeat any and all potential challengers.
In 2012, this one party dominated region, New England, will have a serious problem. According to most analysts, it is probable that the Senate will shift to Republican, and possible that there may be a Republican President.
With a decade of excessive spending, the accumulation of 16.3 trillion of debt, and annual trillion dollar deficits, there is bi-partisan support for cuts to protect against another bond rating decrease.
Maybe it is time Connecticut focuses on political balance to ensure they have representation in the majority. If not, they could be left out of the room for strategic planning of the impending cuts.
CANDIDATE FUNDING
The current Democrat incumbent, who has a 30 year political career, currently receives over 60% of his financial contributions from special interests and Politicial Action Committees (PAC's). The largest percentage of individual donations come from Attorneys at malpractice firms. This support is for being extremly loyal to past Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
